Traditional & History
Bondi (or Boondi), also referred to as 'Bundi', 'Bundye' and 'Boondye', originates from the Dharawal word for a loud thud noise, due to the sound made by waves breaking over rocks.
In the spirit of community safety, Bondi Surf Bathers life Saving Club was formed in 1907 making it the first in Australia. Located at the opposite end of the promenade you will find the ever-popular Bondi Icebergs Club. Founded in 1929, the Club was first established by a group of local life savers who were keen to keep up their fitness during the winter months.
Housing
Bondi boasts a mix of architectural styles ranging from classic red bricks to contemporary designs including the iconic Art Deco apartment blocks built in the 1930s and 1940s.
Recreation and Amenities
The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is a memorable way to appreciate the beauty of the area. The picturesque 6km track is carved into sandstone cliffs and offers uninterrupted views of the ocean, passing multiple coastal beaches and offers a great vantage point for whale watching during their annual migration.
